The American Curl is a distinctive and charming breed best known for its unusual ears that curl backward, giving it a permanently alert and elegant expression.

  • Ears: The signature feature—smoothly curled backward, forming an arc
  • Body: Medium-sized, graceful, and well-balanced
  • Coat: Can be short-haired or long-haired, silky and soft
  • Colors & patterns: Wide variety (almost all colors accepted)
  • Eyes: Large, walnut-shaped, and expressive

  • Affectionate and gentle—loves human companionship
  • Playful well into adulthood (often called “kitten-like” even as adults)
  • Intelligent and curious, but not overly demanding
  • Generally quiet and adaptable, making them good indoor companions
  • Gets along well with children and other pets

  • Exercise: Moderate—enjoys toys and interactive play
  • Grooming:
    • Short-haired: minimal brushing
    • Long-haired: weekly brushing
  • Special care: Ears are delicate—handle gently and check regularly

  • The ear curl is caused by a natural genetic mutation but does not usually cause health issues
  • Requires careful handling of ears to avoid damage

📜 Origin

  • First discovered in United States in the early 1980s
  • Originated from a stray cat named “Shulamith,” the foundation of the breed
